Tremont City, OhioFeb 13, 20172 Comments

I had left town and was surrounded by corn fields. Suddenly here comes the local part-time cop, telling me I’m speeding. There is no sign to mark the edge of town. No way to know you are no longer within the speed limit area. Corn fields all around and he claimed I was speeding in the village. I got a lawyer and beat the ticket. I’ll never drive through that run down Tremont City again. I go way around.

Comments:
Tremont City, OH is a notorious speed trap. The village uses the police department as a tax/revenue collection agency instead of a safety / service agency. It is unfortunate that the Republican controlled OH legislature does not do more to control these communities that misuse the safety and traffic laws. Often the outcome is motorists will avoid the these towns as much as possible, thus hurting the local businesses, which then hire less employees, etc... There is nothing wrong with these local police stopping and informing motorists of the speed limits - issuing warnings/cautions; checking for OVI or other public safety issues. There are other communities that use automated speed warning devices that show you your speed, next to the posted limit. They operate 24 hours a day and do more to help with safety. Towns that are concerned about safety install them, but towns that are concerned about revenue use speed cameras and local police as revenue collectors.

Agreed. If the city wanted to 'do something' about motorists speeding through the town, they would clearly post the edges of town where speed limit changes, and signage that informs the speed ahead is changing from 55 to 25. They actually do not care about the safety of the citizens in the town if they feel they must have a 25 MPH limit, when they do nothing to inform, just enforce and fine $180. It is clearly a speed trap. They are allowed to do it and have no dignity to do other than milk it for all its worth. I cannot prove this, but I strongly suspect the use of 'bait' vehicles/drivers at times. What do I mean by that? A common vehicle sits waiting, stopped at an intersection a few miles from the edge of town. Then when you or I pull up behind the vehicle, they intentionally go no faster than 40 MPH in a 55 MPH zone, baiting you to pass them legally, or course, in hope that you will be preoccupied with making a safe pass, and increasing the likelihood you will not be slowed down enough prior to the speed limit change. And, in addition to that, as you are passing the bait vehicle, the driver increase his speed to increase the speed you need to achieve to make the pass. Once you are set up, they slow down and return to the same intersection to do it all over. May just do this when business has been slow, and/or maybe on weekends. The thought of it is something that reduces faith in mankind. As a sworn police officer, how could a person participate in this hick town practice? Must be the issue of not being able to receive a job in actual enforcement, and cant resist the greed.
