Near Flip Flops
Heading down the island towards Atlantic Beach (heading from the bridge), cops often hang out in the deserted lot next to Flip Flops (the big pink gas station right before the numbered streets), or in the parking lot of the public beach access (across from the fire station)

The police on the island are just looking for people to ticket. I was pulled for my tires touching the yellow center line. I was given a dui style treatment, walk the line, touch my nose, etc. He didn't like the way I walked but wouldn't state in what way. He peered in my eyes, looked in my cooler, wanted to look In my purse (I refused), wanted me to call my husband? !?, wanted to know what all I Had in the car (2 months of beach crap), asked a zillion questions, insulted me (we don't normally get drunks until sundown). I explained I'd been driving for 7 hours and had been looking for a gas station and maybe I did touch the line. I finally remembered I'd had surgery on an ankle and a toe and maybe that's what he didn't like about my walk. He goes don't you think you should've told me, and I said it had been 30 years ago and wasn't exactly on my mind. He probably kept me at the side of the road for 30 minutes or so. he had nothing to hold me on, and I could tell it killed him to let me go. A great way to start a vacation. Other than the sanctimonious police, it's a lovely place. But you're not getting out of a speeding ticket. And hide any prescription bottles well.
