4/17/2014--I confirm this area is a high risk area in the summer. I live there 6 months a year in the summer and am very familiar with this problem. There's a NY State Police Barracks several hundred yards north of the 1000 Island Bridge north entrance ramp. They don't have to travel far from there to set up radar on almost a daily basis. They also sit in a small parking lot at a Dollar General store on the corner of Church St and Alex Bay looking for drivers leaving A-Bay w/o seat belts. When spotted, they radio their 2nd car on Rt 12 to make an arrest. Overall, be very cautious in this 5 mile stretch of highway between A-Bay and the Bridge. Also, on special event days such as: July 4, the conclusion of Pirates Weekend, or other special events, they will set up a Road Block in the area of FX Caprara auto dealership. This roadblock is usually done at least 2-3 times during the summer.
