Nixon Road near Traver Boulevard

Ann Arbor, MichiganAug 07, 20072 Comments

Many non-Ann Arborites use Nixon to enter the city, and outside city limits Nixon has a high rural speed limit. Southbound past the Green Road stop Nixon goes downhill approaching Traver, and it’s easy to exceed the posted city speed limit. Police have been observed parked in a private drive across from Bluett Street, primed to nab someone going a bit fast at the bottom of the hill.

Comments:
This, like many posted limits on city streets in Ann Arbor, has an illegal limit. This was the place I challenged the limit as illegal and won in District Court. The city appealed to Circuit Court and we won again. This posted limit, like many, is NOT legal and not enforceable legally. However, you must challenge the limit in court to win. I saw an officer parked at the condos near the church catching people as they came southbound towards Traver from Green on morning/early afternoon (around lunch). She was there for two days and spent both days pulling people over nonstop. I hope they figured out that they should challenge their tickets, because I have heard from many sources (including the Detroit News) that tickets written there can be successfully dismissed for lack of speed study/appropriate speed limits. There is no reason that street should drop to 30 mph. It's essentially rural and all comparable streets are 35-45 mph minimum. I called the police station to inquire about whether they had conducted a speed study, and they gave me a run around that ended in a prolonged argument about how I should address my feedback on how my tax dollars are spent policing to the city council. As a citizen of Ann Arbor, I feel like she may as well have gone to the mall and shopped (and annoyed fewer people) because wasting time writing tickets that won't stand up in court is (a) harrassing behavior and (b) a huge waste of taxpayer money. I suspect this will continue to be speed trap (although I haven't seen anyone there since my call) until the Plymouth Rd. construction is over because everyone is detouring down Warren and Green.
