Oakton Street near Asbury Street

Evanston, IllinoisDec 28, 20051 Comments

When making a turn right (east) northbound from Asbury onto Oakton drivers have only one or two seconds line-of-sight to the school-zone sign located on a pole just east of the intersection, and signs further down the street are hidden behind parkway trees until drivers are well past the usual location of the radar car, which is about a block east of Oakton.

Im all in favor of obeying school speed restrictions, but if you make this turn you likely *will* be clueless about their presence, and as traffic on Oakton the rest of the day is normally moving well above the schools hours limit, the police can (and do) just sit there picking off drivers making this turn this is an actual speed trap.

Comments:
I live on Oakton Street between Asbury and Dodge. When you turn the corner, even if you are not fast enough to see the sign, it is easy to see there is a school and that the kids are swarming. Residents on this street consistently have an issue with high-levels of speeding and we regularly call the city to complain. All Illinois school zones are 20 MPH and Evanston has a city-wide set speed limit so if you are going over 30 MPH, look for a ticket because Oakton residents are tired of being harassed by menacing motorists who honk at us and tailgate when they are merely passing through. And we are weary of the lost quality of life we once knew before this street became the funnel for Chicago. Take Main or Howard - these streets have little traffic even during rush hour. Oakton Street is in a state of disrepair and drivers' speeding when hitting the numerous cracks is causing a lot of shaking and bouncing in our homes which, in turn, is causing structural damage. ALL neighbors on this street have cracking walls and windows and one guy has a chimney that, while well maintained, has sustained damage due to the bouncing (yes - bouncing!) of his home. This area is most definitely not a speed trap. If you are ticketed for speeding, it is because the local residents have been plying the city with complaints about your behavior. Please slow down.
