Olar is a dying town containing a couple of vacant stores and will continue to die, because of the absence of travel though it. I was told by a trucker not to go through the town because it is a speed trap. Take 301 instead. But the gps told me to take 321. While passing the vacant store with no traffic in sight, I admit I went over the 30 mph section that is in effect for about 100 yards. The cop who of course is there to serve and protect, gave me my first ticket in over forty years that took one fourth of my monthly social security check. There was no one present in the town nor anyone traveling on the road to protect and the only people he was serving were the magistrate and himself to their salaries.

Comments:
"I admit I went over the 30 mph section that is in effect for about 100 yards." First of all, the 30 mph section is almost 3/4 mile. Secondly, how is it a peed trap if you admit you were...SPEEDING?

The concept of a speed trap is not whether the person was speeding or not. It is whether the process is an unfair situation. Most people that get speeding tickets in a speed trap were speeding. From the numerous comments, Olar, sounds like the purpose of the police is not to serve and protect. They are there solely to gain revenue to finance the operation of the 'town'. If the 'town' of Olar can not support its monetary obligations other than to depend on traffic stops; it exists only in name, and maybe it is time for it to unincorporate and have the speed limit changed to 45 mph to be more realistic with the community's characteristics. The state highway patrol fairly monitors such communities' traffic.

Part of "Protect and Serve" is to protect the residents from injuries received due to traffic accidents. Olar has many elderly residents whose reaction times are sometimes slower than they should be. One of the main places visited by the residents is the post office that sit on US321. By stopping those who choose to speed through town, the residents are being protected from potential accidents.

It is nice to read that the good people of Olar went out and hired a policeman and gave him a Black Charger without markings (guess you are embarrassed to let people know it is a police vehicle) just to serve and protect the elderly residents as they cross the street to get to the Post Office. In most cities this is called a crossing guard and they are plainly marked, unlike the Olar police car. As much as you try to rationalize, Olar is a speed trap by the very definition of speed-traps.

I would say that the Pro-Olar comments are probably from some town official or the "Police Chief" who are direct beneficiaries of the revenue generated from the "thoughtless operation" ticket mill they run. I was curious about the revenue sources of the town so I checked the State Treasurer's website. Interesting to see that Olar is delinquent in filing their FY 2015 certified audit with the state. This is a violation of the law. Shouldn't it be punished?
