The speed limit on Hwy 71 is 70 mph, but there is a half mile or so strip when you come up on the community of Ellinger (2 gas stations and a restaurant) about a mile from the intersection of Hwy 955 to Fayetteville that the speed limit slows down to 55 mph.

I travel Austin to Houston often and have definitely seen folks pulled over for missing that 55mph limit sign - it comes up quick. Elinger is a blip - if u blink nearing the town you'll miss the signs. Also, at the turn off 71 for Fayette, junction of 955 (there's a historical marker at the intersection) I often see an official vehicle sitting in the break in the hwy/turn during the night. Coming from the W., past the power plant, look for the "historical marker 1 mile ahead" sign and make sure you are travelling at or near 75mph. Safe travels, everyone.
