On I-81 in NY going south, about 4 miles south of the border
After crossing the border from Canada to US the speed limit is set to 65 mph on a 4 mile long stretch of I-81, but then it changes abruptly to 40 mph. It is easy to miss the first 40 mph sign. About a quarter mile further there is another 40 mph sign, just as the road enters a two lane iron bridge over the river. A state police trooper is waiting after the first sign to catch motorists who fail to slow down right away. If the motorist is still driving at 65 mph, the speeding over 40 mph results in a 25 mph over the speed limit, which is a 6 point traffic citation, $300 fine in 2016.
