On Route 100S in Plymouth Vermont

Watch for speed sign change from 50mph to 35mph for no apparent reason. The Windsor Sheriff has a trap set for the unsuspecting motorist. It will cost you hundreds of dollars to help fill the coffers of local government. It is law enforcement used as a tax raising tool. Be on your guard.

A note to all who have been ticketed. It has been my experience that the windsor county Sherriffs department is constantly abusing their power to write tickets for monetary gain though shady and sometimes lawless activity. Go To Court. FIGHT the ticket. Know your rights~! it is not as cut and dry as you think! Many of these speed traps are not backed up by the proper WRITTEN documents made law by the towns they are in. Some of the signs are in less than visible places. Vermont law requires that speed zones be clearly posted and visible by an "ordinarlly observant person" In one case I was witness as a passenger to this very happening. The sign was blocked by a branch and was easily missed. I encouraged the driver to take it to court. When he went to court he spoke with 29 other people ticketed by the officer. A portion of these people were ticketed the same day for the same zone. each person is called into a room with the ticketing officer to try to work a plea out. all 29 people plead out to a lesser fine most being intimidated by the officer and feeling guilty because the were going more than 35 mph. When my friend went into the plea room, the officer said to him "hey I'm going for 100% today so why don't you make this easy and take the plea" (i am paraphrasing) My friend denied his pompass remark and said "see you in court". They went before the judge and sure enough... the ticket was dropped. think about how many people that day were wrongly charged with speeding and how much money was generated. within a week the sign was cleared and made visible..this is happening all the time!!! thousands of dollars are being extorted out of the wallets of innocent people. Do however have an understanding that the State speed limit is 50 mph. If you are going more than that, you are still breaking the law. In my experience the most effective speed reducer is not stealthy cops sitting in precarious places but rather those flashing speed signs telling you you are going too false. Woodstock has one with blue lights and if you are going 1 mile over it will still make you slow down by shear shock value alone when you see those blue lights!!!

Just wanted to know this speed trap is alive and well as I got a ticket today in it. 50 in a 35. There was a 35mph sign right where the officer was sitting. He swears there was one before it, we'll find out and I may fight it. Once the officer was done I spent a minute or two double checking a map before pulling away from where he had stopped me. In that time, he had already gotten someone else. My daughter was with me, from that point on we kept noticing how random the speeds are on Route 100 ... 50, 35, 40, 45, quickly changing from one to the other. Do yourself a favor, this "scenic" stretch just isn't worth it. Avoid Route 100, as I will from now on.

A classic speed trap indeed! You pass the 35 sign (with no earlier warning sign, as exist in many other places in Vermont), and as you glide down the straight gentle hill, the officer takes his radar shot, and voila! Plymouth was the home of President Calvin Coolidge, who included this in a famous address: "If the spirit of liberty should vanish in other parts of the Union, and support of our institutions should languish, it could all be replenished from the generous store held by the people of this brave little state of Vermont." I bet he is turning over in his grave!

The following is a note I included with my ticket payment because I don't have the time or money to contest it in person: To: Vermont Judicial Bureau November 3, 2016 I’m paying this “speed trap” fine in disgust. The Windsor Sheriff’s department is taking advantage of out-of-town drivers to pad their coffers. They’re getting quite a reputation for this – check the google. It’s hard to believe that the Judicial Bureau would condone this. The ticketing officer was sitting just after the 35 mph sign in Plymouth on rte 100S (where it abruptly changes from 50 mph). At the time (10/28/16), he verbally indicated that I was going 58 mph. However, the ticket said my speed was 53 mph (which is more likely). I’m wondering if the $233 fine was based on 53 mph, or 58 mph. Either way, a $233 fine is outrageous.
