On Route 58 between Franklin and Emporia

Brunswick County, VirginiaApr 10, 20108 Comments

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Department is targeting out-of-state cars for tickets. When I was stopped, I had to pull in behind a car from South Carolina and ahead of him was a car from Maryland. I’m from NC. The sheriff averted his eyes when I looked at him and asked if he was sure I was going 74 (in a 55 mph zone). This is a fundraiser for their county, no doubt!

This is a ridiculous situation and something should be done. I traveled from Hampton Roads to Winston Salem on Saturday and my sister was following me. A sheriff pulled both of us over and gave us ticket, never made eye contact and spoke with a very nervous tone. But that's nothing. This sheriff said my sister was traveling faster than me and you couldn't even squeeze a car between us. I can't figure out why she didn't rear end me. We are going to court.

Interesting, I had a similar experience there. I was in the right lane and had my cc on 65 (I mistakenly thought the speed limit was 60 or 65, i can't remember now...my fault). There was a van in the left lane that WAS AHEAD OF ME in the right lane, and was going FASTER than me. We were the only two on that stretch of road, on a clear day. This officer was sitting at the bottom of a hill, and I admit I never slowed down, because I thought I was going the speed limit but the van was going faster than me! So, after he pulled out, I figured he was going after the van. I was surprised to be pulled, and he said he got me going 70. When I politely asked if I was really going 70 (becasue I was surprised, even though he was at the bottom of the hill, my cruise control is pretty good about maintaining speed), he very condescendingly said, "well, I got no reason to lie..." I was wondering if he nailed the van and not me, though I admit I was going over the speed limit, but not as fast as he had me going.

The spped limits along Rt 58 vary from 35 to 65 and while the signs are probably properly located and spaced they have used the minimum number. It is very easy to forget or get confused as to what the speed limit is. Rt 58 in Brunswick County is also a terrible road - one side was built in the 50s and never improved.

I also got a ticket for going 71 in a 55. I also had my speed control set at 62 as I thought the speed limit was 60. The officer had radar set up halfway up the hill by the shopping center. When I asked the officer how I could be going 71 when the car was showing 62 he said that radar can clock a car going faster if the cruise control is on and the car is going uphill. He said he checked this out on his truck and when he is going uphill with the cruise control on his truck, radar will show his truck going 10mph faster than the vehicle is actually moving. He said this with a straight face while writing me a ticket for the 71. We go to court in Feb. My son also got two tickets here as he is from out of state.

Same experience last Saturday 06/18 CC at 63 mph got a ticket for 68 on 55 zone it as 65 a few miles before. Even it was on US58 the location on the offense as described on the ticket is Reedy Creek Road. Yes, I am out of state Florida they have also stopped two car on front of me both from N Carolina. This is just a money making machine for the county looks like they are paying incentives for high number of tickets...

Its not just out of state licenses they stop. They also stop young people with insurance rates to worry about. Then you get a letter from some shyster lawyer firm who wants to charge you a healthy fee, tells you they can reduce the points but not the fees.

It was June/2011 when I got a ticket on US-58 (ticket said Reedy Creek). This was 9 months ago and its still burning me.... The 65 and 55 limit signs are posted in a way that the 55 signs are easy to miss and the hiding places of the officers with their radar are very convenient to them. Two other cars stopped with me and all out of state, hmmmm ain't that strange. I was polite and yet, no warning or writing the ticket for less speed than he said I was going (which was higher than my cruise said), or for that fact much conversation at all. I felt he didn't want to waste any of his time with any one stop. Just wham, bam, thank you Sam. I just wonder if a poll has ever been taken to see what the ration of pretty ladies that get tickets is verses a warning as compared to the fellas.

I was coming back from the beach in August and was pulled over twice within five miles ..the second time the officers was standing outside of his car with his head in the trunk..I am convinced the first officer radioed ahead and told the second officer to look out for me...The speed limit signs go in and out of 55 to 60 thru out this highway...The officers where unprofessional and acting like children! Get this not to mention ALL the mail I received from this county to promote their lawyers! And when I called in to make a payment..the lady on the phone states..."well we have people from all over coming our courts" my reply was " I bet you do"..Then she states " I can recommend you to several lawyers" and I said " I bet you can"..SHE GOT IT, IT CLEAR...Just a modern day DUKES OF HAZZARD! IS all I can say!
