On S. Main St. near Smithsburg High School

Smithsburg, MarylandOct 28, 20200 Comments

There are two speed camera’s, one facing north toward Leitersburg over the hill with a significant downgrade and one facing south toward the center of town. The camera facing north catches motorists going down a steep grade in the road toward Grove Creek Circle. The mayor of Smithsburg lives on the corner of Grove Creek Circle. The north bound camera was recently moved and was not re-advertised as being moved to a new location. It is a 20 mile per hour zone and from the top of the hill to the spot where the camera takes the picture, motorists naturally pick-up speed even when not accelerating. It is a very unethical spot for a speed camera but the Chief of Police insists that it is an acceptable place for a camera even though Maryland Department of Transportation guidance on speed cameras states that camera’s should not be located near significant downgrades or speed transition zones. In pictures sent to motorists that have been cited, the 30 mph sign is visible in the citation picture.
