This area of Highway 72 is 6 lanes, 3 in each direction with center turn lane. The speed limit is set at 40 MPH. Police like to sit in the parking lots at churches or doctors offices and run radar. They also like to sit off the shoulder behind trees and catch those going East. There are normally 2 officers sitting there almost all day.

As a police officer in Germantown, Badge #273, 1975-1986, Germantown was know as a speed trap. Yes, we wrote many tickets, personally over 4000. We had a gentlemen's agreement within the force to give 12 mph above the posted speed before writing a ticket, I can never remember it being broken, did not have to, you could write tickets all day long even with the spot. Personally I think the city gets a bum rap, do the crime, get the fine, man up, quit whining.

Sir, you may not have written tickets until 12 mph over the speed limit but during that time period many of your co-workers wrote plenty. I lived in Mississippi during that time and was written a ticket for going 4 MPH over the posted speed limit in 1981. My mother also had a ticket issued to her for going 10 MPH over the limit (right before the speed limit changed, she was stopped before she passed the sign) and was told by the officer that it was reckless driving because she was required "by law" to slow to the speed limit as soon as she saw the sign. He also told her that he was doing her a favor by not taking her to jail and impounding her car, which would cost over $100 to get out. I was 12 or 13 at the time and he told her that if he did have to take her to jail, they would have to take me to the juvenile facility until someone could come get me. She told him to please try. My dad was on the Memphis PD and needless to say the guy lost his job within a month, but there were several of those types in Germantown. Hope you weren't one of them :)

A friend of mine got caught here last year - 4 miles over the speed limit. So, Mr Former Officer, you are wrong here. I also like your line "do the crime, get the fine, man up, quit whining." What do you do when you pull over an off-duty officer or someone else you know? You let them go without "getting the fine". Please stop with the holier-than-thou rhetoric. You'd whine and moan all day if you actually got a ticket.
