Route 17 Between Tuxedo and Sloatsburg
Route 17 is a four-lane state highway that alternates between 55 mph, and 45 mph and 35 mph. The slower speed limit is through the villages of Tuxedo and Sloatsburg. Particularly in Sloatsburg, Ramapo Town police stake out several side roads – such as Post Avenue – where the speed limit drops to 35 mph. They will ticket you even if you are going 5 miles over the limit.
It’s a great money maker for the Village of Sloatsburg. But it chases away people who want to eat in the village restaurants or patronize the shops. Local businesses are losing money because of this speed trap.
