Route 57 next to Lake Buel

Monterey is a township of some 900 people. They also have a police force of 3 officers! It’s a vacation area and the main road going there is Rt. 23 from the big town in the area Great Barrington (all shopping is done there). Traffic going to New Marlboro (a township of some 1400 residents, one part-time cop and a vacation area). There are many, many vacation homes up here and the New York City owners of these homes offer a rich target for the Monterey Police Force. To top it off they don’t even have to stop their local citizens as they are on Rt. 23 when going home and not on Rt. 57. The State Police also set up traps there (it’s only the section of the road by Lake Buel, about a half mile long). They can be there anytime of the day, but but be careful around dusk and midday on weekends. By the way, I have never seen the sole New Marlboro cop setting up a speed trap on this section of road, I guess he has better things to do.

Comments:
This remains a speed trap. The cop lives right there on east side of Rte 57. He usually parks on the west side of Rte 57 on one of the side roads, usually the one going to the boat landing to Lake Buel. A good radar detector will definitely pick him up. But morale of the story is to not exceed 40 along that stretch.
