Route 9A at W 23rd Street
Automated camera monitoring speed on the West Side Highway northbound after the intersection with 11th avenue (40°44’58.8″N 74°00’29.4″W). Although the Highway is expressway, the speed limit has been lowered to 30 mph, and the city states that the camera is in a “school zone” because there is a school within a quarter mile of the camera (NYS VTL s1180-b). There is a sign posted on the intersection with 11th avenue that states ‘photo enforced’ but it is too small to be legible and combined with other signs and close to a crosswalk making it easy to miss. The sign results in a civil notice with a $50 fine but no points.
