They have officers that love to enforce the 30 mph speed limit. Go no faster than 34.

At the time I was stopped by one of Trumanburg's finest, I had been following a vehicle driven by my sister in law at a distance of approximately 100 yards, as we both proceeded north on West Main St (Hwy 96) through the village of Trumansburg. When I was stopped, just north of town, my sister-in-law also pulled over to the side of the road, about 100 yards ahead, or perhaps a little more, as she was leading us on the way to Rochester, for a family reunion, and did not wish to lose contact with us. I queried the officer as to how it could be the case that, while maintaining said distance with very little variation, I could have been speeding, while she had not been. The officer's explanation that my car had "surged" up to two or three miles-per-hour above his "personal speeding tolerance limit" (at which limit he indicated my sister-in-law had been driving) seemed very unconvincing to me, as the distance between our vehicles had remained virutally constant throughout our passage through Trumansburg. Any such "surge" in speed must therefor necessarily have been for a very brief period - a matter of a few seconds at most. I think a more likely explanation for why my vehicle was targeted as "speeding" was because it bore out-of-state license plates, and was, moreover, probably readily identifiable as a rental car by the officer. (My sister-in-law lives in nearby Ithaca, and her car bears New York plates.) A perfect cherry to pick in other words: an out-of-towner who would probably not be free to spend the time necessary to challenge a ticket in court, who could be forced by circumstances to passively submit to whatever fine was to be levied. By the way, the time allowed to respond to the citation was a mere 10 days, before dire consequences (suspension of license, etc) would ensue. For a tourist on holiday, this would be a very easy limit to overlook - and one which would no doubt provice the local court with a reason to jack up the fine.
