Southbound I-295 near the sewage treatment facility

Washington, District of ColumbiaOct 31, 20111 Comments

This is a mobile speed camera enforcement location. Driving south on I-295, you’ll pass the two-mile advance green sign for the Beltway, then you’ll cross a small overpass and the road curves slightly to the left. Then you’ll see a small green sign for a weigh station. Slow down at this point (speed limit is 50 mph). Just past this sign, the guardrail on the right ends roughly where the trees end and there is a fairly small new concrete pad just off the shoulder. It’s hidden by the trees so that you won’t see it until you’re on top of it. At any given time you may find a cop car sitting on that concrete pad with the mobile speed camera attached to the front of the vehicle, but there’s no way to know whether the cop is there until you’re on top of the spot.

(If you want to look up this spot on a map, find Laboratory Road SW and draw an imaginary line to extend it as though it ran directly into I-295. The point where that imaginary line hits I-295 is pretty much exactly where the concrete pad is. It’s not visible on Google Maps’ satellite view nor on Google Street View due to outdated images.)
