SR 68 Between Amtrak Station and I-95 Yemassee, SC

Yemassee, South CarolinaOct 25, 20113 Comments

Wife and I were on vacation coming in from Beaufort, SC on Old Sheldon Church Road. I drove under the speed limit on the interstates getting to Beaufort, while 9 out of 10 vehicles passed us. It was a relaxing ride until arriving in Yemassee Sunday morning. After crossing the R/R tracks in Yemassee, I increased my speed up to 47 as I saw a 45 mph sign ahead. I do not recall seeing a speed sign except for the 45 mph going out of town.
“Town” is a generous description as the limits it claims is only a 2 miles radius and there is not even a traffic light; at least not one I saw. Yemassee’s only claim to fame, an Amtrak Station. Estimated median income about $25,000. Population less than 900 and only 2 full-time paid employees…you guessed it, one is THE cop, the other the garbageman. (city-data.com) I also noted that the cop drove a late model car, possibly a Charger, all painted and shiny and all with a big low profile light bar on top. Got to pay for it somehow so just like in Billy-goat Gruff, the troll takes his toll.
THE cop was driving towards me with a car in front of his car. He flipped his lights on and pulled us over in front of the gas station/convenience store just before the I-95 entrance ramp. Cop asked if I knew why he pulled me over and I honestly said I didn’t know. Cop said that I was doing 47 in a 35. I told the cop that the sign said 45 mph but he informed me that he had clocked me before I got to the sign. I could see that I wasn’t going to win so I just resigned myself to take the ticket without further comment. Vacationing in South Carolina is optional. I haven’t had a speeding ticket in years…last time I’ll drive through South Carolina…Beaufort is pretty but not that pretty.

Comments:
I would agree that Yemassee is a speed trap. The exact same thing happen to be. I even accused the office of running a speed trap. A few weeks before that my daughter had the same thing happen.

Me, too, Yemassee got me.. The nice policeman says I was going 54 in a 35 mile per hour zone.. The day after Christmas. I know I wasn't but have no way to prove it. He was sitting at an intersection with a blinking yellow light and a red blinking light. I could see both lights flashing and slowed almost to a complete stop, when he pulled out of a lot on the opposite side of the street from me and pulled in behind me. Then he puts on his light and pulls me over. I couldn't even check my speed. But I'm not a speeder.. one ticket in my whole life and I've been driving 32 years... 180.00 and 4 points..but the police officer then offers information that I can call the Judge and ask him to drop it down to an 80.00 fine and 2 points. Says the Judge will ask him first and he will say he doesn't have a problem with it. I think that was veery nice of the officer but it makes me wonder if everything is legit? Seems a little odd to think you aren't speeding and find out you're supposedly flying .. then they offer to reduce the ticket if you'll only make the call..

First of all, the town has more than 2 full time employees....I know, I was one of about 11. The new police vehicles are not bought with ticket money, but with cash seized from vehicles raveling on I-95. If you're speeding, then you deserve the ticket. I recently got two speeding tickets, one in Jamestown, SC and one in Bonneau, SC. Both of these towns are listed here as speed traps. Yes, I was speeding...no, I don't make any excuses. I was speeding...I was in the wrong. Could kick myself for not paying attention...should have gotten the cruise control fixed, too!
