State Highway 12 near Buxton Light House

Avon, North CarolinaAug 12, 20062 Comments

You will be given a ticket for 14mph over the speed limit, even if your only going 6mph over the limit. The posted limit is 55, if you are going 61 the officer tells you that you were going 69, and if you dont like it you may show up for court on the date that appears on the bottom of the ticket. It’s a trap for travlers, beware!

Comments:
The general rule on the NC Outer Banks is do not speed in the "villages" (Avon, Buxton, Waves, Salvo, etc). Remember, the speed limits in the villages often are seasonal. in Avon, where we own a house, the limit is 45 mph during the off-season (winter) and 35 mph during the on-season (spring, summer and fall). Between the villages, the limit is 55 mph, but most folks go 60-70 mph with relative impunity. In a dozen years I have never seen a speed trap between villages but I always slow down when passing the beach access parking lots and never go more than 40 mph in any of the villages.
