State Highway 135 near Elk Avenue

Crested Butte, ColoradoMay 24, 20072 Comments

There is heavy speed traps around Gunnison all the way to Crested Butte and the speed quickly changes to 15mph in the town of Crested Butte and is heavily enforced. Police love to ticket out of town visitors as this is nice source of revenue for a small town. Be very careful.

Comments:
The only regular speed trap in Crested Butte is located on Gothic Road between the town of Crested Butte and the town of Mt. Crested Butte. The police sit very regulary in the parking area at the Cemetery after crossing the Slate River, on the way up to the ski area. The speed limit in town was lowered to 15mph, after a child was struck and killed many years ago. Folks who live in Crested Butte do not drive much. Everyone walks, takes the free bus around town or rides bikes to get around, so it makes sense to drive slow.

When I first visited Crested Butte I was surprised by the 15mph speed limit. The area covered by this limit is only half a mile across but in that extra minute you get to look around, say hi to the guy overtaking you on a pedal-bike, notice the flower shop ... before you know it 15mph is too fast and you pull over to join pedestrians – actual pedestrians crossing the road without the aid of traffic lights! Life is good - enjoy the smell of the coffee (or more likely herbal tea) as you get tips on local walks, bike rides or ski runs. More cities need this kind of speed limit!
