State Highway 15 near North end of town

Gilbert, LouisianaDec 07, 20042 Comments

Coming northbound out of Gilbert on Highway 15, the speed limit goes from 45 to 55 to 65 within in a reasonable distance. However, the 45 MPH limit extends north of the actual business district for a good distance. Because you have left the business district, you may be tempted to think that the speed limit has gone back up while you are actually still in the 45 MPH area.

The local police frequently wait for speeders in a vacant lot which is just to the east side of the highway on the north end of town, but still in the 45 MPH area. If you yield to temptation and kick it back up to 65 in this stretch, they may nail you. I got pulled over once in this very manner, but the two officers just warned me and let me go. I don’t think this necessarily qualifies as a speed trap, but it is definitely a spot where you’ll want to watch the posted speed.

Driving through Gilbert ( & ALL the Towns on that Hwy.15 route from Rayville to Natchez, Miss.) are Revenue Enhancers for LOCAL police depts. ! Although farther & not very scenic...I-55 is a much POLICE SAFER route. One ticket will ruin your day/trip. Gilbert P.D. ruined one of my trips...& now I take the longer/ticketless route. (My ticket...to the best of my knowledge...was NOT sent to B.R. ...just as the Officer said, when paid quickly. I give him credit for that ! Oficer was young (late 20's-early 30's) clean-cut/mannerly...but would not allow me to go off un-ticketed.

I agree with the person above. I received a ticket going 6 mph over the speed limit. He stated that if I paid the ticket quickly that it would not be on my driving record. I did question him about writing the ticket only going 6 mph over and he said that they start writing tickets when goin 5 mph + over the limit. I suggest you go slow as molasses though this town! Also be careful because there are a lot of dips between 45/55/65 limits through out this town. Very easy to get caught going 5 + mph over!!
