State Highway 152 near Casa De Fruta Parkway

Hollister, CaliforniaAug 02, 20062 Comments

Hwy 152 has a stretch near Casa de Fruta / Hollister which has hills and high-speed turns. It is also heavily used by 18-wheeler trucks hauling freight. As a result, there are many places where it’s easy to pick up speed going downhill and go above the posted speed limit. Incidentally, speed limit signs are few and far in between. There are also many truck turnouts partially hidden by hillsides where CHP units have been known to hide.

Comments:
This is a big spot for the CHP. They now sit at the CDF (firestation) on the north side of the highway and they will sit about 1 mile east of Casa De Fruita - Hwy 156 on the north side of the road. There is at times 3 CHP and 1 standing outside the vehicle with the laser radar gun. If you see them it is too late don't bother trying to slow down. They already know your speed and when your headlamps take a big dip from hitting the brakes it is a dead giveaway that it was you and not the car next to you. Im not a fan of driving 80MPH on this road so if you do I hope you get a ticket. If your at 72-73 like the rest of us just slow down in this area and you should be fine

I commute every day between Los Banos and San Jose. The whole stretch between Los Banos and Gilroy is a "trolling" area with their KA band radar. They drive along in one direction and get you coming the other way, then perform a "Dukes of Hazard" u-turn in the center divide. The Cal Fire station and the various small turn out areas are definitely favorite fishing holes for the CHP. Just get a good KA band radar detector and keep your eyes peeled in this area for them hiding out with their laser and you'll be fine. Of course, slowing down to is another option. If you're headed East over Pacheco Pass to I-5, you should also be careful at the Romero Visitor's Center entrance (laser) and just on the other side of the Hwy 33 Santa Nella overpass (they like to hide behind the dirt mounds).
