State Highway 19 near Lively Street

The problem in Fayetteville is that the speed limit signs are confusing. It is a limited access four lane highway that has been 65 for most of the miles between Beckley and Fayetteville. The speed drops to 50 right after you cross a hill. I really thought that the last sign I saw was 55 but the officer said I was going 66 in a 50 zone. I did see the 50 sign about 50 yards ahead of where he stopped me but I had no idea I have gone by one before. Next summer when I return to the area I will check the signs. I have not had a speeding ticket since 1977. After reading all the comments I realize that there are several miles of total enforcement on 19. My ticket for going 66 in a 50 zone was 162.25 with no points

This is also not entirely true. There is nothing confusing about the signs. The speed limit on most of Rt 19 is 65mph and there is plenty of time to reduce your speed when you see the warning sign. Coming from Beckley the speed is reduced to 55mph at the southern end of the Oak Hill city limits and continues until a short distance before the stop light at Laurel Creek Road where it is further reduced to 50mph. Now given the fact that the cops in this area allow you 5 over the speed limit you still have time to drrop your speed. The problem comes from people from out of state that aren't paying attention or locals that aren't paying attention to the road signs. I have given Fayetteville several hundred dollars over the years when I wasn't paying attention and I'm a local. The reason for no points is that Fayetteville doesn't report tickets written on 19 to the state and cheats the state out of their cut. So tickets don't get reported to your state of residence. If you decide to fight the ticket the fine will be more from the judge and it will be reported to the state as further punishment. You will be paying what the town has to give to the state in the increased fine and the points will make you reconsider fighting any future tickets and to spread the word about the increased cost.
