State Highway 246 near Interstate 101

As you head westbound toward Lompoc on Hwy 246 in Buellton the speed limit increases from 35 to 45 mph. Right before the sign posting the increase to 45mph is a side residential street where the sheriff’s department hides to clock traffic speed. Even though there is a clear view of the sign and most drivers start to increase their speed when they see it so that you have reached the new speed limit as you pass the sign, they will cite you if you have not actually passed the sign yet. I was cited for doing 48 in a 35 zone literally five feet in front of the 45 mph sign. The good news is that the judge is well aware of this speed trap and if you contest the ticket you stand an excellent chance of having it dismissed as long as your speed is close to 45 mph and not way over.
