State Highway 3

Rattan, OklahomaNov 15, 20041 Comments

The City of Rattan, in southern Oklahoma just east of Atoka on Highway 3, population 750, runs a speed trap to pay for local government. They have extended their city limits along the highway and will nail you as you come from the east going toward the west. There is only one sign that lowers the speed limit to from 65 to 45, and they get you as you slow down to the 45 level. Oklahoma recently raised all of its fines for speeding. 1 to 10 mph over the limt will cost you $150, and 11 to 15 over the limit will cost you $190. And it goes up from there. The local cops will NOT cut you any slack becase their salaries come from fines. Slow down and pay attention!

Actually...rattan is east of Antlers ((45 miles east of Atoka)). It has a population of less than 250. They have not extended their city limits which go just west of the Rattan School to just east of Howard's cafe'...about a four mile distance. Their signs take you from 65 to 55 to 45 to 35. Their is only one cop in this city. He and the city clerk are the only paid employees in the community. They rely on city retail taxes and tickets. At 3pm (daily) you will find the one police person sitting at the school until 4pm.
