State Highway 301, North of Route 17

Port Royal, VirginiaOct 01, 20012 Comments

301 South speed limit is 55 MPH North of the Rappahannock. Crossing over the bridge going down hill the speed limit drops to 45 MPH and within 100 Yards drops to 35MPH within small village!! State Troopers will be at south end of the bridge since high bridge obstructs view of road south. Expect to be ticketed for "reckless driving" if speed is not checked immediatedly. Highway at this point is a four lane divided highway. Assume that enforcement Northbound is just as strict.

Comments:
The speed limit drops to 35 mph only through the town of Port Royal. This may be a little lower than it should be (although motorists should note that there is significant pedestrian traffic crossing the road here), but the police are actually pretty forgiving and don't give tickets for anything under 50 mpg. The people who get fined are those who blow through at 60+.

The previous comment is as much an outright lie as the law enforcement officials citing this speed trap as public safety. No such thing, if the intent is safety then expand the reduced limit/s and give everyone the oportunity to adequately respond to changing environment. The police dept, courthouse and county should be ashamed of themselves, there is even a list of lawers who are provided ticket details to troll for a quick payoff for all involved. As a former Navy MP I can tell you this is precisely why police officers and our court representatives have unfavorable recognition.
