State Highway 527 near Just inside city limit sign

If your are coming from west into Kingstree on SR 527 known to the locals as the Sumter Highway or Academy St., the speed trap is located just around curve from the city limit sign. They use unmarked SUVs and city police cars and use some sort of handheld electronic device to nail you. They position themselves at a well worn spot on north side of this road and catch people leaving the city and people coming into the city. Speed limit is 35 mph and the cops set just in front of the 55 mph sign. This should be a 45 mph zone according to the highway laws, but since they use it for revenue, you wont get it changed! I questioned a resident on this road and he immediately said it was a speed trap. The cops will give you a careless driving ticket for $235 and you can go and pay the ticket immediately at City PD. The officer can OK it being reduced to $135. Pay your dues and you are done, you wont even have to go to court! I will do no more business in Kingstree as a result of this. Avoid this town as I was told there are two more speed traps there, one on the bypass wherever that is.

Comments:
I work in Kingstree and this is not a speed trap. People only call this area a speed trap if they are caught speeding. Just abide by the posted speed limits and there is no trap.
