State Highway 55 near Newport Avenue
The exit at the end of the 55 Freeway terminates becomes Newport Avenue. There exists an automated red light camera by Nestor Traffic Systems. According to Cal Trans records the signal has not had appropriate traffic studies in over nine years, despite California state laws that clearly specify reassessment every few years.
The speed limit at the end of the freeway is not the usual speed limit of 45 mph. It is instead 35 mph!
This 35 mph zone is not consistent with other off ramps in the same vicinity and is not consistent with zoning at other Orange County freeways.
Orange County traffic engineers have already complained about the problem because they are getting calls from irate citizens. The City of Costa Mesa traffic and zoning departments have also had complaints.
Despite the complaints, the city of Costa Mesa is still fining people in their speed trap by claiming that they are running the red light at Newport and 19th Avenue.
The fact of the matter is that the yellow light is one second too short because the speed zone should be FORTY-FIVE MILES PER HOUR and NOT 35 mph as posted!
