State Highway 64 near Interstate 40

Roland, OklahomaOct 20, 20071 Comments

Between the Arkansas border town of Fort Smith (Garrison Avenue route)and the entrance to interstate highway 40, the Roland police are hypervigilant. Once you enter their jurisdiction, it is advisable to stay either at the speed limit or a mile or two under. It is apparently the main source of income for this little town, and they appear to really enjoy their work. If you’re coming in from I40, you can bypass the Roland/FortSmith exit and take the Dora or I540 exit to avoid the hassle and enter Fort Smith.

Comments:
Beware of state Hwy.64 that goes east-west beginning about 4 miles west of Arkansas river, the Roland city limit, & continues west for about two and a half miles. Roland is a tiny town (city?)with no visible source of income. The city court clerk has just been arrested (Nov.2010) for stealing over $ 20,000. Roland has a fleet (half dozen or more) of police cars that run that 2 mile stretch of highway, back & forth like vultures. It's highway gangsterism. State poice acknowledge they target out of state car plates, particulaly Arkansas. They operate a kangaroo court, a overweening Magistrate (like Justice-of-the-Peace that has been chased out of most states) that rides into town every other week to an auditorium (at police station) of probably 50 people, unfailingly giving fines from $150 to $400 or more. Those that can't pay, cash only, end in the same building Roland Prison, prisoners are the city work force. Oklahoma is a "dirt poor" state & the people can't afford such outrageous fines for usually trivial trafic violations. Those that can afford a lawyer need only appeal the ruling & the city's lawyer never replys so the charges are dropped. The poor suffer this opperesion. Recent claim of the police is stopping at stop sign, your car must not only stop, it must move backward to prove you stopped. The Roland police userp the state legislature & write their own laws. People wonder how the court clerk could steal over $20,000, and nobody noticed ? And who else was involved it the theft. This is a dangerous town. Do what you can to avoid it.
