State Highway 74 near State Highway 177

Rockingham, North CarolinaMay 12, 20083 Comments

Hwy 74 East from Charlotte is 55mph until Rockingham, and then increases to 70 for 2 miles before returning to 55 at the top of a hill. The speed trap is at the bottom of the hill. At traffic court, 80% in attendance were from out of town/ state. DA is quick to reduce the violation, but not the fine $$$.

Comments:
As you approach this area, there is only one small sign showing speed limit is dropping to 55. Within a half mile there will be a trooper in the median with radar or lidar equipment that won't set off a detector as we found out. There should be a double set of signs here as further down the road it reduces again to 45 and there are two sets of signs on both sides of the eastbound lanes warning of the reduced speed. This proves that this is a speed trap aimed only at unaware non local drivers. A great way to welcome industry and commerce to the state. We thank the great state of North carolina for being to nice to out of towners. It just happened that we were in the left lane and 4 or 5 trucks and some cars blocked that single 55MPH speed limit sign. The 2 miles of 70MPH is the set up and the small sign is what catches you and makes it legal for them to operate the scam.

Come on folks get the story straight. The speed limit on the 74 bypass around RHam is 70 MPH from where it starts just East of the Pee Dee River at around MM203 and stays at 70 until Bus 74 joins it on the east side of Hamlet.. The so called Speed trap is still another mile or more east of that intersection. Put down your cell phones and other electronics and read the signs. They ignore 5 over the posted limit.. Be happy with that.. The 45 mph is another 4 to 5 miles east.. Pay attention to the other traffic and not to your texting and you will have no problems.. If you got a ticket there you deserved it !!!!!

This area has been a speed trap since before the dawn of cell phones. All 4 members of my family have received speeding tickets in this "trap". It is a direct route to Wilmington, NC (UNCW) where my daughter went to school many years ago - without a cell phone! Sorry, you are very wrong.
