State Highway Route 25 near Public Safety Building

Moultonborough, New HampshireOct 31, 20073 Comments

The speed limit on Route 25 is 50 MPH until you get to downtown Moultonboro. It comes up fast after the road curves and the reduced speed limit of 30 MPH is poorly marked. The Moultonboro police wait just around the bend and pull you over. Most victims are tourists in this vacation destination so they are less likely to fight the violation in court. I did and was able to reduce the penalty. This reduced speed limit is not necessary and is primarily a "revenue enhancement" for the local budget.

Comments:
I live in Moultonborough and I can assure you it has nothing to do with revenue enhancement. State law dictates all revenue from vehicle stops on state highways will go to the state regardless of who does the enforcing so none of the cash stays local. On another note. Whats the speed limit in front of the elementary school in your town moron? Plus, there is a day care center across the road that all the flat landers dump their kids so they can have some time off during the summer. By the way. Long Island Road is also a state road. You also state the 30 MPH sign is poorly marked. what are you blind?

that 30 mph speed is also for the school zone you go through on route 25

Easy on the language. That 30 mph sign is indeed somewhat obscured, because it is the same distance off the pavement as all the utility poles. As you drive down the hill eastbound into Moultonborough, if you're not looking for the 30 mph sign, it will not catch your eye, because the poles partly block your view of it. Also, although there's a "30 mph ahead" warning sign on the turn half a mile earlier, it's easy to miss that sign if (a) you are looking at oncoming traffic instead of at the right side of the road, or (b) your rearview mirror is positioned like mine and blocks your view of the sign. It's true that the speed trap is not for "revenue enhancement," at least not officially, but the cops pull over dozens or hundreds of drivers there every day in the summer. (I am repeating what the cop who stopped me said.) As for the school zone, I was stopped for speeding on a day in the summer when school was out, so the school zone/20 mph light was not flashing. That's the best time to catch speeders; during the school year, the flashing light is more likely to remind you to slow down. PS - The speed limit elsewhere on Route 25 is 45, not 50.
