State Highway, Rt.1 going either north or south into town limits.

The traps are typically set up going either south headed toward Richmond or north toward Fredericksburg. The speed limit drops from 55 to 45 to 35 in a VERY short distance and the troopers or the town cops do not give you ANY room for error. We were headed back to Richmond on Christmas Day and we were dropping our speed from the 45 to 35 zone, and the trooper clocked us at 43 in a 35. As soon as you see the signs dropping the speed limits ahead, make sure that you hit the posted speed as soon as you get to the sign posting it.

I just returned from a day in traffic court in Ashland and pleading guilty to speeding. Since my case was one of the last heard I got to see how many people got caught like I did in this stretch of VA Rt 1 north and southbound. It was obvious this was one of the Ashland Police's favorite sites for "stationary radar". Quite a few got caught at Rt 1 and Quarles Rd where the speed zone is 35. As advertized, this stretch of Rt 1 ramps up and down from 35 to 55 in a relatively short stretch. The road is 4 lanes. undivided. Since it's undivided it's not the standard 45 which would have been a lesser fine. Quarles Rd is 0.4 miles short (south) of the 45mph sign and about 0.6 short of the 55mph sign. "Coincidentally" ; - ) many people were charged with speeding at 51-52 in the 35 zone. So here's a hint, if you get caught be "courteous and polite" (the officer's standard wording). If you can appear in court - do it. Yeah, it's a day off but the chances of getting sentenced to taking a DMV-approved defensive driving school are good. Having a good driving record helps. Alternately, a bad record or other charges and won't go as well. Believe me, they'll have a copy of your driving record for the judge. Court costs are a flat $64 and driving school will cost me $75 as opposed to a total of $220 and a record if I waived the appearance and paid the fine per the court's website. The driving school will cost me a Saturday and $75 but the charges will be dismissed and I have a little over 60 days to complete it and submit a certificate to the court.

Officer S.,.th (didn't get first name but he works Sunday afternoons) flat out lied about my wifes speed, he had no radar, incorrectly identified locations on the ticket, and my wife refused to fight instead she got the same as the person above which is what they want, your money. He even had the nerve to tell me it was nothing personal (I defended her at the time). If I had taken a couple hundred bucks away from him he would take it personally. He also used the local ordinance for the violation so the money would stay in the local system, state police enforcement goes to the general literacy fund. Ashland Police have a facebook page with a review section. They also list summons written as a criteria for Officer of the month. Go on their facebook page and tell them they are the reason you don't shop in ashland.
