State Highway Seward near Mile Marker 12

Seward, AlaskaSep 18, 20063 Comments

The Alaska State troopers (multiple vehicles), travel around Seward (I saw them in the radius of 25 miles) and catch unsuspecting visitors. I found only visitors being stopped and harassed (you can tell by the rental cars & agency signs). The road is very scenic with lots of overlook places. Also the road changes from 2 lane to one lane (in one direction), I was caught while merging as I increased the speed to pass one vehicle and let it merge. The trooper was coming from the opposite direction (travelling in a Chevy SUV) and I’m not sure how he was able to judge my speed! Anyway he said he clocked me at 73 on a 55 mile limit, I think I was only doing a 63 (was on cruise for 57 all along).

I think its a big trap to get money for the local community – unfortunately most of the business in the town depends on visitors!

I am sorry for what you consider harrassing, but I have to differ with you. I live in Seward only since 2006 and have already lost a coulple of friends to the dangers of driving the Seward Highway. As you say it is very scenic with breataking vistas. unfortunately too many people are traveling fast or without complete attention and it is dangerous. I know as many locals as tourists are stopped percentage wise, but Seward has only around 3000 year round residents and tourism peaks at as high as 30,000 a day (on the fourth of July). Our 2 troopers that cover the entire Kenai peninsula are trying to keep the place safe for all of our guests. It seems that the one time people speed they are caught, but I would bet therre are many more when you have not been caught. Slow down and enjoy the scenery but be safe!

Its not a speed trap if you're a local resident. Warning are not given to visitors, you will get a ticket for a minor infraction.

Update - September 2015 Apparently little or nothing has changed since the original poster's comment in 2006. The section of road is approximately 10 to 15 miles north of Seward. It is one of the worst speed traps in the State of Alaska. -There are very few speed limit signs on this section of highway. -The Seward Highway -- up until the Kenai turnoff -- is marked as 65. -This stretch of road is no different, but is actually designated as 55. -State troopers will drive northbound out of Seward and in my case (and apparently the OP's case) falsely accuse visitors of driving 70 mph or higher just to make the trooper look polite in "knocking it down" to 65. The goal here might also be to convince you that it is is a bad idea to contest the ticket. -If you contest the ticket, the traffic magistrate in Seward has been there for decades and will turn a blind eye to the state troopers' shenanigans. -You will not be allowed to ask the Seward magistrate to transfer the case to an out of town magistrate in order to get an unbiased hearing.
