State Route 2 (Northbound At Bellaire Bridge & Southbound At 4th St. Exit

Benwood, West VirginiaAug 03, 20021 Comments

Local patrol cars will sit northbound at the abandon exit ramp to the Bellaire bridge, either at the top, next to the hillside weeds or on the approach ramp to the highway from the bridge, half way down the ramp in the shadows. Heading south, they will sit at the base of the 4th street exit ramp, back in a dug-out space within the tall weeds. You can’t see them untill you are right in front of them. The highway speed limit is 55, and both of these locations are on a slight downhill grade where you will pick up a little extra speed. Out-of-state drivers get nailed the most, while locals get a break. Now i’m a local, but one for all and all for being treated fair!

Comments:
The year is 2021 and this Town of Benwood, WV is worse than ever... But to be specific, it is only one particular cop that is doing all the traffic stops... I monitor public safety radio and I can confirm that every single day that he works, this one guy spends his entire shift (and very often double shifts) sitting on the side of US 250/ WV SR 2 conducting traffic stops... It is actually unbelievable how many stops this guy will effect in an 8 or 16 hour day. Once he turns a victim loose he will have another customer within 2 minutes- every single time... And when I say he is out there all day every day, I am not exaggerating in the least... It is actually shocking that someone can be this aggresive... but on the other hand, he stops so many vehicles so quickly that unless he has some modern way to quickly write out citations, he may not be citing every vehicle that falls victim to his prowling but I cannot answer that. I have never witnessed him in action because I avoid Benwood at all costs, however, I have heard word from a friend that he uses a white unmarked car and he parks on the berm and on entrance ramps to do this unsavory activity under the guise of "making route 2 safer"... My friend actually calls him the "pig of all pigs"... In the meantime, while he is off on the freeway conducting traffic stops, the town is left without police patrol... The few other officers of this town are more inclined to patrol the town with the occasional speed enforcement on the 55mph freeway where it is very easy to drive 65+ but those officers' speed enforcement is nothing that would warrant being included on a Speed Trap website. This guy has been doing this all day every day monkey business for the last several months so I just had to comment... Thus If you are driving through the area, usually (but not always) from 7am to 11pm, look out for this joker from the Marshall/Ohio County line just North of Boggs Run Rd exit to the southern town limits near (as this guy says on the radio) "the red light in McMechen"... (and since there are two listings on this website for Benwood, I will copy and paste this comment on both listings.)
