Where to begin with Helen, GA. This town is notorious for aggressive traffic enforcement all day, everyday. It was about 9pm and I was pulling out of the Huddle House in Helen and accelerated to 42 MPH in a 35 MPH zone. I was immediately pulled over from a police car hiding being a building. First thing he says when he comes up to the window is I smell alcohol even though neither me, nor either one of my passengers had been drinking. I say I havent had anything to drink and Ill be happy to take a breathalyzer and he tells me that wont be necessary and to get out of the car. Its 35 degrees, lightly raining, and Im wearing short sleeves. He wouldnt let me get my jacket out of my car at my request. At this time another police officer pulls up for no apparent reason and they administer a sobriety test, even though I said Id be more than happy to take a breathalyzer. After I take it he tells me that I failed it? Again I say I havent been drinking and Ill take a breathalyzer, but he just tells me to get back in my car. After talking to the other police officer he comes up and gives me a ticket for too fast for conditions and the ticket says 42 in a 35. At this point I was happy to get out of there after being harassed. A week later I call and find out the ticket is $290.50??? What? For going 7 MPH over the speed limit? I pay the ticket and to this day I wont go back into that town. This is just the tip of the iceberg for Helen, GA. I know numerous people that have been flat out harassed by these police that are obviously bored out of their minds in the north Georgia Mountains. If you go into Helen, youve been warned.
