State Route 51 near Willow Street

Carbondale, IllinoisSep 02, 20081 Comments

While driving North on 51 past the downtown area, and just past the U-Haul dealership and across the street from the Southern Illinoisian offices, there is a used car lot that the police cars sit behind. The speed limit is 30 miles an hour though there is a sign just a few yards past that reads 45. That speed limit does not start until the sign, though most will assume they are in the clear to accelerate t 45. This is where the cops get people.

Comments:
I've traveled this road every day for 8 years, and I always exceed the posted speeds by 5 to 15 mph. I have never been stopped. I have seen plenty of vehicles stopped, usually 3/4 mile up the road (north). I do watch for the police car, so am prepared to slow to under 40 in the 30. Drivers coming from the north usually see the police car in time, so seldom get pulled over. They are more likely to get pulled over when a police car is parked just passed where the two-way separates into one-ways.
