NYS Police regularly sit in the parking lot of a former elementary school, located near a sharp curve. They train their radar on the crest of a rise coming into Masonville, to catch vehicles travelling south from Sidney, NY. Route 8 between the towns is wide and smooth and the speed limit is 55 mph until just before one enters Masonville, when the limit drops to 30 mph. Masonville is a small hamlet, with a four-way stop at the intersection of Rt 8 and Rt 206. It is a rural area, so the sudden drop in speed limit is unanticipated unless you are a resident of the area. It is significant that the posted limit is 40 mph on Rt 206, but only 30 mph on Rt 8, approaching the same intersection. State Police like to man the trap during the morning and early afternoon on weekends, and are often there for the holidays throughout the year. Thanksgiving – Christmas seems to be a favorite time. Since the village is little more than a rural crossroad with a few houses and a convenience store, I can only assume that it is revenue generation rather than safety issues that merit the presence of up to three State Police cruisers at that location.
