State Route 9 near US Highway 285

Fairplay, ColoradoOct 08, 20061 Comments

One patrolman in a bronco with radar that comes out of who knows were. The patrolman was very open about writing a ticket for a out of state driver. He in my opinion wrote the ticket for far more than I was going in order to bump up the fine. When he handed me the ticket he advised me that there is another speed trap in Alma just a few miles up the road.

Comments:
The whole town of Fairplay is a speed trap, during the summer. I am a local, and I have been stopped many times, for "not coming to a full stop at stop signs," "having a wheel on the white line when turning right." What the game is, of course, is to see if you're from out of town. Once it's established that I'm local, the officer writes a warning, to save face. The dangerous spot is turning from 285 in either direction, onto 9 through the burg. The limit goes from 45 (285) to 25 (9) immediately, and the tendency is to step on the gas after the turn. Fuzz is on the right, either facing N or in a parking lot for the liquor store, the Brown Burro or the bakery. Keep the needle on 25, especially if you have an Arizona or Texas tag. Same applies when turning off 285 Southbound by the Rec Center. THERE IS NO SIGN after the turn, but you have turned from a 55 zone and chances are you still retain speed for a distance, and they will pop you at the top of the hill if you are doing more than 25 down that stretch.
