Spring Lake is virtually crime-free, and the officers have little to occupy their time beyond minor speeding tickets and potential D.W.I. candidates coming from South Belmar. A Spring Lake cop can be found at any time of day or night at the border of South Belmar, either lurking in the park directly to the west of 3rd Avenue or very obviously positioned on the east side by the lake. South Belmar’s posted limit is 30 mph, and it immediately drops to 25 upon entering Spring Lake. Although it’s difficult, it’s advisable to go UNDER 25 at this particular spot, as the general assumption seems to be that every other car coming out of South Belmar is piloted by a drunk or a tourist. I was stopped a few years ago by a rookie officer in this general vicinity, and he informed me I was going 40 mph. The only discrepancy was that at the time, I was stuck in traffic between a Cadillac Escalade and a herd of geese. Needless to say, I beat the ticket, and the judge chastised the officer for wasting his time. Naturally, the lad couldn’t provide radar sheets…
