Town north of Salinas on Highway 101

Prunedale, CaliforniaAug 01, 20001 Comments

Yet another US-101 speed trap for you: Prunedale! You aren’t going to believe it: this small town actually put up wooden cutouts of pedestrians, cops, and patrol cars, holding up signs reading "55!" and "It’s 55 in Prunedale"! There’s signs thanking the CHP for their enforcement efforts. Traffic often backs up here trying to make impossible left turns onto city streets, having to cross over several busy highway lanes to do it. There’s also several nasty intersections with people’s homes and driveways right off the highway. This area desperately needs to get a bypass built around it. As you might expect, speed enforcement here is zealous, and they’ve even got it designated a "double fine zone"!

Comments:
In the 90's that stretch between Dunbarton and Prunedale used to be bad. I got stopped by a cop who I spotted about a 1/4 mile behind me. He claimed he paced me, no radar. My speedo said 55 in 55. He said 70+, which was I think the speed he needed to go to catch up to me. He was much too far back to get an accurate pace. Sent my stuff to do traffic school and got it back AFTER the scheduled court date saying "sorry, you can't do school with an out of state license"... Had to pay the full fine and no chance to argue the ticket in court. Not sure how it is now, but I've been through there on business trips a few times in the last year and normally saw someone pulled over....
