Ullery Road (old Highway 69)

Linn Valley, KansasJul 13, 20102 Comments

Ullery Road is the only access into the gated Linn Valley community. About a mile south of the entrance, the speed limit drops abruptly from 55 to 40, not the 45 that is normal in the area. There is a sign advising reduced speed ahead, but the 40 limit begins at the crest of a long downslope and visibility of the speed limit sign is low. There is no construction or anything else along this rural stretch to justify such a low limit; it is open country. A police cruiser regularly sits on the shoulder well down the slope and monitors the crest of the hill. Some residents have commented on what appears to be an inordinately large police force for such a small community.

Comments:
The 40 mph speed limit also extends north of the entrance for about a mile. The speed limit sign there is just before the crest of a long downslope toward the south. There is no city limit sign at any point along the road, either, leaving in doubt the actual jurisdiction of the municipality.

A correction: There are city limit signs, but they are small, and the one on the south is on the opposite side of the road. On a recent night a police cruiser with all lights off was set up monitoring the southern approach. Since there is no illumination along the road there, he was totally invisible to anyone coming from that direction.
