The speed limit decreases from 45 to 35 mph just past Publix going south, but that’s not where the action is. Massive enforcement – we are talking about almost constant sirens – happens right as the road narrows from two lanes on each side to one. I’m sorry to say that one day when I was thinking about other matters, I neglected to slow down and got zapped.
The Keys has been notorious for strict speed limit enforcement – it is actually mentioned in a popular guidebook – but 90% of the activity I’ve seen is at this specific trap.
The cop who got me claimed that this is due to the dangerous road. He said the limit was lowered when the highway was no longer divided, but honestly I don’t see much in the way of increased danger.
