It was 3 a.m., dry as a bone … only I and a marked white and red cruiser were on the road, traveling west. My speed was 55 mph, and I actually slowed down a little just to be extra-safe as I passed the cruiser, which was doing about 50 mph. My mistake … the speed limit was in fact 50 mph, and when I saw the sign, I immediately slowed to the correct speed. That wasn’t good enough though, and the "Twin Barneys" stayed on my tail until the apparent end of their jurisdiction. There they pulled me over and we went through all the usual rigamarole of licence, proof of insurance, etc. I did NOT cop an attitude with them. Next we went through a ridiculous Q&A about how much drinking I had done that night. I told the officer that I am a Mormon and NEVER DRINK alcohol, but he insisted that I answer his question "yes or no," even after a perfectly lucid conversation with him. FORTY-FIVE MINUTES later, my wife and I were still sitting there at the side of the road, waiting for these guys to do something. In all that time a total of two pickup trucks, a passenger car and an 18-wheeler drove by. I actually began to read a novel while we waited. If you think perhaps a stern warning was in order, guess again. This overbearing, officious and thoroughly unpleasant man issued me a ticket for TRAVELING TOO FAST FOR CONDITIONS! My actual violation was driving between 3 – 5 mph over the posted limit, on a deserted, clear, dry road. Since then, I’ve heard from a number of other people who have had similar run-ins with Blairsville police. If this is not a trap, then it certainly IS an attitude. I advise caution when driving through this section of Pennsylvania’s U.S. 22.
