But traveling southbound after you exit the town, US 550 (NM 44) becomes a four lane divided highway on the southside of the intersection with NM 197. The catch is that the sign for a 50 MPH limit, plainly visable even before you reach NM 197, is 1/10 mile south of the intersection. So you are on a freeway, see the 50 MPH limit, and begin to speed up accordingly. I was nailed as after I crossed NM 197 and began to increase my speed from 35 to 45 during that short stretch of freeway. Nice revenue enhancement scheme. Oh yeah, maybe my rental car with Nebraska plates played a role as well. Nice thing was that the cost of the ticket was only $57.
