US 70 Bypass near MLK Boulevard

New Bern, North CarolinaMay 06, 20082 Comments

The speed limit on US 70 is 70 mph until it drops down to 55 mph on the bypass over New Bern. You do not go through the city but for a few brief miles the speed limit is 55 mph because it’s in the citys’ jurisdiction. Well documented speed trap.

Comments:
Actually, the speed limit from that point on doesn't go above 55 the entire rest of the way. Once you hit that 55 mph sign at Glenburnie in New Bern, it then drops to 50 once you cross the bridge, then back up to 55 from the middle of James city to Havelock. When you get to Havelock the limit drops to 50 mph and then to 40 mph before picking back up to 55. From there on, with the exception of one more spot (i think) it's 55 all the way to Morehead city. Saying that it's only 55mph because you are in the city's limits is misleading since that's where it drops from 70 to 55 permanently, that is what is well documented.

Good news! Because of the highway being improved to Interstate standards. The NCDOT has increased the speed limit to 60MPH through New Bern City Limits. Be advised 70E is undergoing massive road improvements. Interstate standards with the roadway having overpasses at all intersections. Targeted to be complete around 2025. Havelock 70 by-pass to be completed early 2024.
