US Highway 1 near Mile Marker 32
Heading into Big Pine Key, the speed limit drops quickly from 55 to 45 to 35 as you approach a bridge in what appears to be the middle of no where. While this low speed limit once was a necessity, fences have since been erected to prevent the endangered Key deer from crossing the highway in this area. Enforcement of the 35 mph limit is common all the way through Big Pine, particularly at night.

Just because they put up the fencing, there are still Key deer that get through the fencing and get hit, just not as many. The 35mph is only at night time, and the short stretch where it drops from 55 to 45 is needed as a buffer zone, to slow down the crazy drivers trying to get to Key West. This is not a speed trap, just follow the rules.
