US Highway 129 near The Dragon/Deal’s Gap

Maryville, TennesseeAug 28, 20052 Comments

US 129 is a curvy mountainous road loved by motorcyclists for it’s natural beauty and challenging curves. More than one cyclist dies there each summer from excessive speed/lack of skill. The Blount County Sheriff’s Department is in full force on summer weekends. They will not tolerate crossing double yellows.

Some of the so called traps in Maryville I'll give you. This one I wont. I live on the dragon. There are so many accidents I can not only tell the service by the sound of the siren, I can name the actual vehicle. Not all accidents are fatal here but, almost all are serious. This road has a 50 MPH speed limit and there are curves so tight that a big bike with running boards will hang them at 20! I don't mind idiots taking themselves out of the gene pool, but most wrecks here are when someone crosses the double yellow because the can't hold the curve and headons someone (in there own lane) comming the other way. When that happens, you have involved the innocent. The cops that work this road have been mandated by the state to cut down on accidents on this road. In short if you get busted here, you deserve it!

There are plenty of reports of police abusing their powers on this road, all one has to do is learn to use Google. As for this being a speed trap, in some places yes in others no, the problem is the cops use it for revenue more than preventing accidents or saving lives. Try to find someone that got just a warning, you won't trust me. How's about some facts since the myth of the Dragon has been presented here; the Dragon has had 35 motorcycle fatalities in 16 years (1996-2012) of which 1 was from a heart-attack. There are more motorcycle fatalities on other Blount county roads than on the Dragon each year. The real fact is this is a revenue maker now; only 6 citation were written in 2003 compared to 437 in 2012 once the state kicked money in as the state gets a cut of every fine paid. The previous post about the speed limit is false, the fact is it hasn't been 55mph (not 50mph) in TN since 1992 when it was dropped to 40mph then it dropped to 30mph in 2002 on the TN side and also on NC side in 2005. So get your facts straight before repeating local myths, as for innocents getting hit head-on, try 5 in 16 years on the Dragon though one was a slide under a semi partially in the riders lane, so again someone is just as likely to get hit head on any other "safe" road in Blount County than the Dragon. A little simple math tells us that 5 head-on's are not the greater part of 35 fatalities and since Tennessee doesn't share it's data on non-fatal motorcycle accidents like other states just how exactly did the previous post know that most wrecks are when someone goes left of center on the Dragon? The answer is they can't know, it's simply an opinion stated as fact. Oh and any accident on a motorcycle is serious, it's not a car with air bags and crumple zones so that is just silly to report as something special to the Dragon.
