US Highway 17 North near Chevron Station

Bridgeton, North CarolinaFeb 15, 20062 Comments

As you go into Bridgeton from New Bern the speed changes from 55 to 45. A lot of times the Bridgeton cops will sit in the median and get people. My first tickit was in Bridgeton 64 in a 45. They sit so just as soon as the speed changes they pull you.

Comments:
Before the NC Governors Highway Safety Program helped Bridgeton get traffic officers there were several deaths along that highway from speeding. That section of Highway 17 has many businesses and driveways that open onto the road. There is a reason the speed limit is 45. Since the officers have been there, there have been fewer crashes and no fatalities. That is why they do it so that people won't fly through the middle of town going 20-30 mph over the limit. It is only a "trap' if you are speeding.

The comment about the deaths and crashes has to be before the roadway was improved. Now it's a multi lane highway with median and turn lanes. The only difference in the 45 mph limit area and the 55 mph area that feeds into it is the high presence of LEO. It's the absolute definition of Speed Trap. Locals know about it, heaven help the out-of-town travelers.
