US Highway 199 near Mile Marker 1 through 8

Grants Pass, OregonJun 07, 20071 Comments

I’ve been driving this stretch of road for over 30 years. The Oregon State Troopers work in tandem here as well as the Josephine County Sheriff. The speed limit drops from 55mph to 45mph on a downhill run. Its a 4 lane highway that used to be 55mph all the way. I’ve only been stopped once but I have literally seen many hundreds of traffic stops over the years on this stretch. They also use Unmarked cars and there are lots of hiding spaces to view you from.

Comments:
The speed limit drops from 55 mph to 50 mph in the safety corridor, roughly between the Redwood Ave. crossing & just below the college, then to 45 as one gets nearer to town. The problem is that the State Hwy. in this area is built like a freeway, especially in the safety corridor, so that drivers have a tendency to go much faster than the posted speed. On the other hand, the safety corridor has turned the most dangerous stretch of Hwy. in the State into a much safer drive.
