US Highway 2 near US Highway 2

Waterbury, VermontFeb 24, 20082 Comments

There are two speed traps in Waterbury. They are located at each end of town where the Village Speed limit of 25 MPH is posted. Enforcement is especially overzealous on weekends but may happen any time during the week. It is best to slow to 25 MPH when the Reduced Speed Ahead sign is seen.

I think characterizing enforcement as "overzealous" is a bit overstated, but the locations are correct. Before applying labels you need to understand a bit of local history. For decades Waterbury housed the state mental hospital, and the town is still base for several halfway houses that help challenged folk avoid being institutionalized. Some of these people don't have the concept of safe crossing down. One local character pushes a big trash can on wheels around town collecting soda bottles. Around here neighbors take care of each other no matter their handicap. Good on the town for making them feel welcome and for taking steps to ensure their safety!

This would be considered Jay Walking. Why not enforce that law? Challenged folk are not the only residents whom do not have the concept of safe crossing. Many on foot do not look before entering a crosswalk. They think the state law that crossers have the right of way means that all cars stop on a dime. I know some of these people. They thinks it is the responsibility of the drivers not the walkers to make sure the way is clear.
